Who are we?
The Identity Lab is led by Jed Brubaker, an Associate Professor of Information Science in CU Boulder's college of Media, Communication, and Information. The lab focuses on studying and designing how identity is designed, represented and experienced in technology.
The team

Jed R. Brubaker
Lab Director
Associate Professor
I'm an Associate Professor in the Department of Information Science at CU Boulder. I joined the faculty at CU after finishing a Ph.D. in the department of Informatics at UC Irvine. I love cat pics and gummy candies, and have never met a research method I didn't like.

Anthony Pinter
Teaching Assistant Professor
ATLAS Institute
I'm an Assistant Teaching Professor in the ATLAS Institute. I completed my Ph.D. in Information Science at CU Boulder in 2022. When not on campus, I spend much of my time with my feet clipped into things (like bikes and skis).

Dylan Thomas Doyle
Ph.D. Candidate
Information Science
I'm a Post-Doctoral Researcher in the ID Lab. As an HCI researcher, my work focuses on the intersection of values-based design and organizational systems, particularly within emotionally intense scenarios such as end-of-life support. I'm also the Director of the AI for All Tomorrows non-profit and podcast. I received my PhD from the University of Colorado Boulder, Masters of Divinity from Columbia University, and BA from Sarah Lawrence College. Prior to a career in technology research, I served as a Unitarian Universalist minister and hospital chaplain.

Camille Butera
Ph.D. Student
Information Science
I am a PhD student in Information Science. Previously I completed a BA in Sociology at Smith College, an MSc in the Social Science of the Internet at the Oxford Internet Institute. My research focuses on the ways in which the design and infrastructure of technology shapes the way we conceptualize ourselves and our ties to other. Outside of the lab, I'm currently trying to learn as many kinds of fiber arts as I feasibly can.

Joseph Trybala
Ph.D. Student
Information Science
I am a first year PhD student in Information Science. I have an MS in Data Science from Drexel University, where I started my research journey, and a BS in Computer Science from Stockton University in NJ. My research was in uncomfy spaces in online communities, I hope to now fall down the rabbit hole into one of my varied interests. Outside of lab you will find me sweating my way up a trail, tinkering, or playing some sort of video game (OSRS, Factorio, Warframe).
Jack Manning
M.S. Student
Information Science
I am a Master's Student in Information Science and a member of the IDLab. I completed my undergraduate degree in Creative Technology and Design at the ATLAS Institute at CU Boulder last May. My work focuses on creative implementations of technology and how it can better solve people's problems. While I love to blend my personal interests and my professional work I enjoy cooking, playing games with friends, and making silly things.

Daniel Sullivan
BAM Student
Information Science
I am in my final semester of a master's degree in Information Science at CU Boulder in the Identity Lab. My research explores the implications and design dimensions of AI personas created from data of deceased loved ones. After graduation, I hope to pursue a career in service management or IT for nonprofits. Beyond my academic work, I enjoy experimenting with unconventional music projects, playing board games, and creative writing.
